When searching through hundreds of benches, here’s what I looked for:
"But, aren’t these the same as ‘storage boxes’?"
Kinda, but slightly different.
The main 2 differences are that these have armrests and a back to them.
Plus, storage boxes can offer more overall storage capacity, on average, for the price and size.
These differences alone are enough to set them apart.
However, a lot of online stores (and physical stores) tend to lump outdoor storage boxes and storage benches together in the same category; Since they look similar, and you can store stuff inside them.
If you’re not planning on sitting on the bench too much, then you’d be better off with a simple storage box instead since they’re often priced cheaper overall.
Outdoor 'Waterproof' Storage Benches - Don't Be Fooled!
As mentioned in my previous article (about the best outdoor storage box picks), it's important to know the difference between waterproof and water-resistant.
Simply put, waterproof means that no water can penetrate it. It can be fully submerged without water getting inside.
Water-resistant means it's able to resist water to some extent, but it may still get wet if it is exposed to water for a long time or if it is submerged in water.
For example, a water-resistant watch may be able to resist water splashes or light rain, but it may not be able to keep water out if it is worn while swimming or showering.

Don't be fooled by shady brands selling "waterproof" outdoor storage benches if the item doesn't have the following:
- IP Rating (You can learn about this here)
- Some kind of rubber gasket seal around the opening
- Has ZERO air gaps around the body of the bench
So, having said ALL of this...

All of them were just water-resistant.

- Weight Capacity: Benches are made to be sat on, so you’ll need to make sure yours can hold you and your guests! I recommend purchasing one with a weight capacity of around ~300 lbs. This is usually enough to accommodate 2 people sitting on it.
- Material: Choose a material that can withstand the elements and won't crumble like a cookie. Outdoor storage benches are available in a variety of materials such as wood, plastic, metal, and resin. They can all work well, but I’ve found that Resin is the more popular option than the others.

You can still go with any of the other materials (especially if you LOVE the style); Just know that they might not be as durable or affordable. Which leads me into... - Price: Don't break the bank on an outdoor storage bench. Set a budget and stick to it. You don't want to be eating ramen noodles for a month because you splurged on a fancy bench.
- Aesthetics: Make sure your outdoor storage bench is easy on the eyes. It's going to be sitting in your yard, so you don't want it to clash with your flower beds. Find one that looks good and makes you smile.

There are of course others with bigger or smaller storage capacities, but most that I came across (while researching for this article) were around 60 gallons. This is equal to about 8 cubic feet.
The average across all the recommended outdoor benches here was: 53.4 gallons (7.1 cubic feet).
Q: "What is the ideal height for an outdoor storage bench?"
A: According to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), the recommended height for benches is 17” to 19”.
However, Wayfair and Dimensions.com both state that the standard bench height is 18” to 20”.
Both of which are very close to ADA’s measurements.
Having said that, I’d say anywhere between 17” to 20” in height is a good bet.
