Dining Table

Top Pick for: Best Budget Table

VANGSTA

So, you’re looking for one of those fancy tables that *magically* turns bigger?

Give yourself some props here- You’re looking to accommodate more people when needed, right?

You want to be able to have family/friends over without worrying if they can all gather around the same table...

Leave no man or woman out in the cold! (Except maybe for that one annoying cousin...)

I hear ya.

(Gotta make room for all these wonderful family member, am I right?)

However, you may not know where to start, where to look for one, which ones are good, etc, etc, ETC...

Soooo many options, so little time; it can get overwhelming.

Well, that's why this guide was created!

We'll go over some of the best expandable dining room tables, that won't break the bank.

Let’s get started!

What do you call a table that expands?

Simple; You call them: expandable tables or extendable tables.
Either term means the same thing. Throughout this article, I’ll use them interchangeably.

What are expandable/extendable tables anyway?

These are tables that have the ability to be made bigger and fit more people.

They can then be returned back to their normal (smaller) size to save on space.

How are they different than regular tables?

There are 4 main differences that set them apart from regular (fixed) tables:

  1. Slight Weight Difference

Because of the extra parts that allow them to change their size, they tend to be slightly heavier than regular fixed tables. Although, this is not always the case.

   2. More Customizability/Versatility

More customizable in terms of offering you additional space to seat more people at the table.

   3. Pricing (depending on the table and size)

Expanding tables also tend to run a bit pricier compared to similar non-extendable tables. However, this also depends on the brand and size.

   4. Added Assembly Steps

Putting together one of these tables also involves a few more pieces than traditional tables. This doesn’t mean it’s super complicated though, so don’t get scared away!

Just make sure to pay extra attention to the instructions.

How do extendable tables work?

Depending on which one you get, this can vary slightly from table to table. For the most part though, they all rely on a simple mechanism that allows them to openextendand then lock into place.

A lot of them have individual extension pieces referred to as: 'leafs'.

You can think of this leaf as an extra piece of the tabletop.

Here’s an example of an expanding table in action:

(credit: carpenterjames.com)

As the table above opens up, a leaf is pulled out from an inside compartment.

Then, it's placed in the middle gap of the table.

And vualá!

You've now made the table bigger for more guests.

'Yeah, but are they better than regular tables?'

Yep, I’d say so! Simply because of the versatility they can offer you.

As the saying goes, “Better to HAVE IT and NOT need it; than to NEED IT and NOT have it.”

Cool, this is pretty much all the info you need to know.

Now, let’s look at your different options.

Here are some top recommendations.

FAQ: Common Questions About Expandable Tables

Q: "Should I buy an extendable table?"

A: I would say YES if you wanted to save on space in your dining area, while still having the ability to fit more guests ONLY when needed.

If you don't get a lot of guests too often then this would make sense. while still optimizing for space.

Although, if a traditional table is more your style, and you prefer keeping the table the same size, then I’d say skip it.

Q: "What takes up more space, a round or rectangle table?"

A: This will mainly depend on the room you’re placing the table in.

A round table tends to take up more space in a square-shaped room.

However, if the dining area is more of a circular shape, then a circular table will look a bit more aesthetically pleasing and use the roundness of the room more efficiently.

Q: "How do you clean an expandable table without damaging it?"

A: You can use some regular cleaning wipes like the ones found here:

These wipes are not rough enough to hurt the tabletop while still having enough cleaning power to get the job done.

Although, I recommend making your own home-made cleaner; It'll be less harsh and will give it a great clean!

First, I go ahead and set your table to its fully expanded state - that way you can clean all its parts.

Then, use these items for the best results:

  1. Fill your spray bottle with a cup of water (warm water preferably, but cold is fine)
  2. Mix with 1/4 cup of white vinegar
  3. Add 1 teaspoon of dish soap

Spray down your tabletop and use your microfiber cloth to lightly scrub then dry.

In Conclusion - So, long story short…

So, there you have it my friend- some of the best expandable dining room tables I've found on the interwebs.

I’d highly recommend getting one for your home!

It’s extremely versatile and will impress your guests with how ultra-fancy-schmancy you are…

Kidding of course! (kinda)

But it will definitely catch the eye of all your visitors.

Also, when you really think about it, it’s like you're getting 2 sized tables for the price of 1.

Plus, with all your different options there’s a good chance you’ll find the perfect one for YOU.
